- Maintains Stable Vacuum: Controls the vacuum level (typically 40–50 kPa) to prevent fluctuations, which, if not controlled, can cause udder injury and increase infection rates.
- Air Admission: Functions by admitting atmospheric air into the vacuum system to balance the air removed by the pump with the fluctuating air demand from the milking units (e.g., liner slips, teat cup attachment/removal).
- Placement: Must be installed in the vacuum line between the sanitary trap (interceptor) and the first vacuum tap, ideally close to the interceptor.
- Sensitivity: Older types (spring or weighted) are generally more sensitive to air flow changes, while modern diaphragm-type regulators maintain a more consistent vacuum
